Thermoplastic nasal splint for post-burn nasal vestibular stenosis

S K Pandey

Abstract

Background. A simple design of a splint for nasal vestibular aperture maintenance and gradual dilation, made with low-cost and easily available material, is presented.

Methods. A thermoplastic splint was used in a pilot case of nostril stenosis. The thermoplastic is heated up, then moulded to the desired shape, with the edges rolled up to prevent it from slipping into the nose.

Results. The fact that the splint was rigid, yet mouldable, did not only maintain the post-surgical release of the nasal aperture, but also allowed further dilation as needed.

Conclusion. Based on the initial experience, it seems that the splint is easy to clean at home, easy to reinsert and easy to remould when needed at the local clinic or at home, and did not dislodge spontaneously. Moreover, the material for its design was easily available and of low cost.
